Our computational challenges are so big and unique we can't just buy our hardware, we've got to make it ourselves. Our Platforms Team designs and builds the hardware, software and networking technologies that power all of Google's services.

As a Mechanical Engineer you design and evaluate our data center systems, identifying product requirements and contributing to research and project planning.

From the chip to chiller, you are responsible for designing and optimizing an architecture that will scale with Google's continued growth.

With your technical expertise, you lead and manage projects, develop product and process improvements, provide consultation to others and help facilitate training and development.

As Senior Thermal Design Engineer, you will reinvent the shape of electronics, balancing performance, comfort, and appearance.

You'll be a Mechanical Engineer with a specialty in solving thermal problems creatively. You'll know of the current state of the art solutions, model complex systems virtually, and invent solutions when existing ones are not sufficient.

In this role, you'll comfortably work on the borders of risk, actively communicating with hardware and software teams to establish a design direction, creating prototypes that prove it, and working to scale that prototype.

You will design products that satisfy all performance and reliability specifications, while optimizing for efficiency, flexibility, and total cost of ownership.

  • Participate in development efforts related to computing devices with a variety of heat sources.
  • Take responsibility for mechanical and thermal design, including requirements gathering, concepts generation and detailed design, analysis and verification testing, cross-functional reviews, and manufacturing release.
  • Contribute to overall system architecture and optimize TCO of designed solutions. Work with mechanical engineers to create thermal systems to match expectations and certifications.
  • Work with internal manufacturing teams and external fabrication vendors during the product development cycle.
  • Architect and influence product design by providing mechanical / thermal engineering insight into the technology roadmap.
  • Identify and scope projects around innovation opportunities and technology risks.

    Minimum qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in design, analysis, thermal analysis, and shipping consumer hardware with thermal needs.
  • Experience with 3D CAD systems and NX.
  • Experience with advanced CFD software (e.g., FloTHERM / Icepak or equivalent).
  • Preferred qualifications :

  • Master's degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, with focus on Thermal Science.
  • 6 years of experience in cooling strategies and technologies used at the package, board, and system levels with application of advanced cooling technologies.
  • Experience with mobile devices.
  • Experience in the areas of design for medium to large-scale production using technologies such as sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, machining, and die casting.
